Computing power and memory
The HANA in-memory technology requires a high amount of processing power and memory to rapidly aggregate, analyze and secure vast data sets from a boundless number of sources. Moreover, as the amount of structured data continually grows, you have to be able to flexibly provide extended CPU power and memory. As everyone is talking cloud these days, you might assume that a move to the cloud is the only way to achieve these requirements. It’s not!
Good reasons to stick to on-premise or go hybrid
An on-premise HANA deployment might be the best choice for your business. You might, for example, want to keep your infrastructure close to your company building for latency or connectivity reasons. Or, maybe your industry has specific IT governance or compliance regulations on how and where you store your data. Whatever the reason, it is perfectly possible to bring scalability, resilience and flexibility to your on-premise infrastructure.
Maybe there’s even the possibility to go hybrid: move development and quality systems, for example, to the cloud and keep production-related infrastructure on-premise.
On-premise deployment: SAP HANA Appliances or TDI
When deploying SAP HANA on-premise, there are two possibilities: choose an SAP appliance or go for SAP Tailored Datacenter Integration (TDI).
SAP appliances: everything you need in one box
SAP appliances offer a fast time to value when deploying HANA by supplying hardware, software and services in a single footprint:
- Hardware: server with a prescribed amount of memory, compute power, storage and network connectivity
- Software: RedHat or Suse Linux operating system
- Services: certified and fully supported by SAP
Tailored Datacenter Integration (TDI): more flexibility
The TDI program allows you to leverage your own infrastructure (server, storage, network, backup) and operational processes (to cut costs), while tailoring it to your storage and computing power needs.
Bringing cloud agility and speed to your on-premise infrastructure
As today’s digital era demands increasing speed, agility and scalability, more and more datacenters are replacing their traditional architecture with converged or hyperconverged models, which packages computing, networking, servers, storage and virtualization in a unified solution.
The benefits of a converged solution? By bundling all the different components together, you can:
- accelerate deployment time
- simplify management
- reduce costs associated with cabling, cooling, power and maintenance
- easily scale up or scale out, as your requirements change
The hyper-converged infrastructure that is gaining inroads in the market today builds on the above concept. The main difference, though, is that a hyper-converged architecture is software-centric: both the storage area network and the storage abstractions are implemented virtually in software rather than physically in hardware.
Thanks to the scalability and agility, (hyper-)converged solutions are a great alternative if you are tempted by the benefits of the cloud but would like to keep your solution on-premise.
Our hardware partners
At Flexso, we closely work together with vendors like Dell and HPE who both offer traditional and converged systems for SAP HANA that have been certified by SAP. Since these packages (servers, storage, networking, software and services) are pre-configured, they ensure very fast deployment which is interesting for migrations and greenfield implementations.
Both players also deliver hyper-converged solutions. Although not yet certified for SAP HANA, these bring great value when you require a scalable and flexible infrastructure. Many organizations see this as a jumpstart to scalable computing and deploy their HANA application servers and other application types on hyper-converged computing.
Also from an economic point of view, on-premise solutions include financially interesting solutions. Dell for example offers several ‘Pay as you Grow’ plans, allowing you to ‘finance’ your datacenter hardware, software and services at a monthly fee on a scalable basis. Payments are lowest in the first year and increase over time to match your planned business growth.
